Axis and Sound Intelligence launch advanced audio analytics embedded in cameras

Axis shows new network video solutions at the Essen Security Trade Fair

Sound Intelligence, supplier of advanced audio analytics technology, is the first Axis partner worldwide to integrate embedded audio analytics into the network cameras of Axis Communications, supplier of network video solutions. During Security Essen the market will be able to experience this technology for the first time at the stand by means of a live demonstration.

‘Embedded audio analytics’ enables users to recognise sounds based on preconfigured parameters. This way sounds indicating aggression, gun shots, car alarms, breaking glass or graffiti spray cans can be recognised. Other sounds are filtered and ignored. The precise detection of these sounds facilitates early intervention.

Advanced audio analytics

Today many systems are trying to recognise sounds solely based on volume causing unwanted sounds to be equally processed. Sound Intelligence’s patented technology is the only audio detection technique which is based on the operation of the human ear. After years of in-depth research this technology is able to separate sound sources and to recognise different sounds, just like the human hearing system does. Sound Intelligence has succeeded in recognising a vast amount of sounds with a minimum of unwanted alerts. In the event of a sound detection, a trigger can be sent to Axis Camera Station or any other Video Management System.

Advantages of embedded analytics

Audio analytics has been around for some time, but until now this was done using an (external) server. Axis and Sound Intelligence have developed a solution whereby the audio analytics is done in the camera itself. This is possible thanks to more processing power in Axis cameras and because Axis enables external parties to programme the ARTPEC-4 chip using the ACAP platform. The close cooperation between Axis and Sound Intelligence has made it possible for the algorithms that were initially on external servers, to now work in the camera itself.

The possibility of embedded audio analytics no longer requires the installation of a central server, which allows you to save on costs. This also increases your flexibility since you no longer need to purchase a separate system. This way it becomes cost effective to add remote locations with a limited number of cameras to an existing system. An additional advantage is that you can save bandwidth, because you do not need to stream in full HD all the time, but only when a desired sound is detected. Thanks to the simplification, the cost savings and increased flexibility, small systems, hosted systems and systems with limited internet connectivity  (ADSL, 2G/3G) can now benefit from advanced audio analytics in a simple way by means of the embedded solution.

In principle, audio analytics is aimed at every user of an Axis network camera looking for added functionality on the camera. This new solution by Sound Intelligence and Axis focuses on prisons, the healthcare sector and inner cities, but also on the banking sector (such as cash machines), public transport, the retail sector and car parks.

“We are pleased and proud that we are able to market this solution together with Axis, global market leader in security video”, confirms Derek van der Vorst, CEO of Sound Intelligence. “Axis strongly believes in its partner model. They consider best-of-breed partners who are able to provide high-quality technology and integrate it into their products. They deliver the hardware and we the software, so we jointly deliver the eyes and ears in the network cameras of our common customers.”

Embedded audio analytics by Sound Intelligence in Axis network cameras is immediately available through Sound Intelligence’s resellers.

”We are delighted that we have introduced this solution together with a leading partner such as Sound Intelligence”, states Edwin Roobol, Regional Director Middle Europe at Axis. “Until now, nobody else has been able to do this and embedded audio analytics is a fine example of new innovations and products that are on display at Security Essen. Continuous innovation and updating demonstrates that it is important for Axis to keep reinventing itself and to keep developing our solutions. This reiterates our leading role in the sector."

Security Essen

At Security Essen, which takes place from 25 - 28 September 2012, Axis will present its latest products and innovations relating to network video solutions in hall 2, stand No. 217. Examples are video encoders for simple migration of analogue systems to IP and new network cameras which meet specific demands from customers such as banks. An example is the AXIS P12 network camera for discreet monitoring.

Some partners have their own representation at the Axis stand. Apart from Sound Intelligence, Iomega, NICE and Quadrox will show their respective solutions regarding network video. Furthermore, Criminee, an initiative where local authorities and the industry work closely together, elaborates on its activities. For more information please visit
