Sigard is an application of the sound detection technology where the system is set to detect verbal aggression. As soon as the sound contains the indicators of aggression, a signal is sent which can be used e.g. to activate the nearest observation camera.

Presently, in camera observation only what is visible evokes a response. However, incidents often start with verbal aggression, which is not detectable by visual observation alone. Thanks to Sigard, the observation team is alerted to incidents in an earlier stage.

What does Sigard look like?

At any given location sensors (microphones) are placed. The number depends on the local conditions. A narrow alleyway will require a different approach than an open square.

Each sensor is connected to an analysis computer specially designed to perform the sound analysis. In case of an aggression detection a link is made to a central server in the observation room. It is important to note that this connection is only used when a detection has been made. In the observation room the detections are shown on a monitor and logged, including the interval leading up to the incident.

The SIgard interface is a software package, providing efficient handling of detections.

Some of the functions of SIgard

  • Overview of all sensor locations on a (city) map
  • Sound and images from a camera are stored together
  • Comments can be stored with every detection
  • Reports can be generated on numbers of incidents
  • SIgard provides reliable information on public safety by automatic generation of log files
Applications
  • SIgard responds to aggressive sounds, irrespective of the level and nature of the background sound. This makes efficient and useful surveillance possible. SIgard provides an immediate alarm in case of streetfights, (sexual) assaults and various other cases of violence and/or panic.
  • SIgard can be applied as a supplement to existing security systems in spaces of various dimensions. For example in airports and prison cells.
  • Locations with specific acoustics such as car parks do not pose a problem for the application of SIgard.
  • In public transport the staff are regularly faced with violent behavior and threatening situations, which are immediately registered and reported by SIgard.
  • In locations where large numbers of people gather, SIgard reduces the need for preventive deployment of police personnel or security guards.
  • SIgard can be used to detect panic attacks in (psychiatric) shelters and other special care institutions.
